Free Boiler - Income Support

If you receive Income Support then it is possible you could qualify for a FREE Boiler Grant which would see your old boiler replaced. The Government-backed ECO scheme helps people like you on Income Support, and other similar benefits, to give them access to funding for a new energy efficient boiler in their home.

The scheme is open to both homeowners or private tenants as long as someone who permanently resides in the household is in receipt of Income Support. If this applies to you then you could be on your way to a brand new boiler which will help you heat your home more efficiently and reduce your energy bills.

How does the Free Boiler scheme work?

The ‘Big Six’ energy suppliers – British Gas, EDF Energy, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE – all contribute toward funding as part of the Government’s ECO Scheme. Under the scheme, households in receipt of qualifying benefits who have boilers more than 7 years old, could be in line for a grant towards the installation of new energy efficient. Boilers under 7 years old are excluded as the scheme as it is likely these are still economical to repair rather than replace.

If you meet the following criteria then there is a big chance you could be eligible for a Free Boiler Grant…

  • Receive Income Support
  • Homeowner/private tenant in the UK
  • Your boiler is 7+ years old

There are no costs incurred by you for your fees for the removal of your old boiler, plus the installation and aftercare for your new boiler, as this is sourced through the government scheme. This allows you to get a new boiler for free or at a fraction of what it would normally cost.

How do I know if Income Support is the benefit I receive?

Income support is available to help you cover your costs if you’re on a low income. If you are not sure what benefit you receive then check your benefit paperwork for the payments that you receive fortnightly.

For those on Income Support up to the age of 24, you will receive up to £58.90 per week; those 25 or over receive up to £74.35 weekly, and couples (both aged over 18) will receive up to £116.80 weekly. It is possible that you may have been moved onto Universal Credit which is also known as the ‘new style JSA’ and could also make you eligible for a Grant.

What benefits and savings will a new boiler bring me?

A brand new boiler will bring many benefits, the most significant being a reduction in your energy bills. As a new boiler will usually operate at an energy efficiency level in excess of 90%, this means that for every £1 you spend on heating your home, at least 90p is converted to heat. As a result, households who benefit from a new boiler could expect to see their energy bills fall by as much as £300 per year.

Not only will your house feel warmer and heated more cheaply, there’s also the benefits to the environment. By running a more energy efficient boiler means that your own carbon footprint is reduced significantly, contributing to the Government’s overall aim of reducing greenhouse gases.
