How do air source heat pumps work?

An air source heat pump functions similarly to a fridge but it works in reverse, to heat the home. They transfer heat rather than generate it. Here is a breakdown of how it works:

  • Air from outside is drawn in and blown over a network of tubes that are filled with refrigerant. This will warm up the refrigerant and transform it from a liquid into a gas.
  • This gas then goes through a compressor which increases the pressure. Compression will also add more heat, much like how the air hose gets warm when you top up the air pressure in your tyres.
  • The compressed, hot gases go into a heat exchanger, with cool air or water surrounding it. The refrigerant moves its heat to the cool air or water, making it warm. It is then circulated around the home, providing heat and hot water. Whilst this happens the refrigerant condenses back into a cool liquid and the cycle will start all over again.
