How do I get a government grant for a boiler?
The government’s Warmth Allowance has been made available in order to replace old and inefficient boilers in homes across the UK. If you’re a tenant or a homeowner who wishes to benefit from the free boiler scheme, then you must first check whether you’re eligible. Here are the 3 qualifying factors that you must meet before applying:
- You’re either a home owner or a private tenant who is living in rented accommodation.
- Your boiler is more than 7 years old.
- Any of the individuals within your household receive one or more of the following income-related benefits:
– Universal credit – Working tax credits – Pension credits
– Child tax credits – Income-related ESA – Income-related JSA
The Government boiler scheme covers a whole range of heating options, from oil boilers and electric boilers to LPG boilers. If no one within your household receives any of the above income-related benefits, then you may still qualify for some discounts on a new boiler based on some of the other information that you have given to us.
However, if your boiler is over 7 years old, then you won’t qualify for the free boiler scheme. For boilers that are less than 7 years of age, it’s usually more cost-effective to repair the current boiler rather than have it completely replaced.
What are the benefits of replacing my boiler?
Research has shown that having an old and inefficient boiler dramatically adds to your monthly heating costs. If you consider that a boiler over 7 years in age only operates at 65% of its full efficiency, then this means that 35p of every pound spent on heating the home is being wasted. Installing a new A-rated boiler which operates at 90% efficiency would drastically reduce this wastage to no more than 10p per pound.
Over the course of a year, these savings in energy costs would adds up to an average of around £300. Imagine what you could do with that! Since the free boiler scheme is completely free throughout the entire process, you’ll also get to save money on removal and installation costs, as well as any maintenance that’s needed in the future.
